Teaching
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood — Marie Curie
At the University of Lausanne, the MetP group teaches the processes that shape rocks deep within the Earth, from the scale of a mineral grain to that of a mountain belt. Our courses cover metamorphic petrography and petrology, thermodynamics and kinetics, the physics and chemistry of the Earth’s interior, regional and Alpine geology, and a metamorphic mapping field camp.
Our aim is to help students look closely at the evidence, analyze it carefully and build a consistent interpretation. Earth sciences have become increasingly quantitative, so we combine classical observation with thermodynamic modeling, compositional mapping and programming, and we bring recent research directly into the classroom. Fieldwork remains at the heart of our teaching: there is no better place to understand metamorphic processes than in the rocks themselves, and the Alps are right on our doorstep.
